Beyond the typical risks that consumer electronics (CE) companies face – such as competition, fickle consumers and fast-evolving technological changes – the alluring new global markets bring with them new types of risk. Companies pursuing international opportunities confront challenges usually not considered in domestic market expansion. These range from currency fluctuations, unfamiliar regulatory requirements, government expropriations, government intervention (or instability), intellectual property challenges (such as “brand protection” and counterfeiting) and access to financial resources.
